Expected Outcomes of an Appointment at Career Connex

  1. Career Guidance for Secondary school students

Career Connex is a career guidance service located in South County Dublin for secondary school students using career guidance and psychometric assessment who would benefit from additional help in:

  1. Exploring future careers which are of interest of them in the longer term and

  2. Identifying the best possible third level courses (Level 6/7/8) and/or QQI-FET for them to select to achieve their career goals

  3. Understanding the codes & points for the courses in the individual colleges/universities. This includes gaining and understanding of the National Framework of Qualifications.

  4. Direction on where to research overseas options in the UK and Europe if of interest.

2. Making Clear Choices about Third Level Courses

The overall goal of a career guidance session will depend on the stage that the student is at - but the overall goal is to help students to be clear about the third level courses they are choosing to support their future career choices.

This will prevent students from applying to courses before realising that the course is not actually suited to - or of interest to them.

An appointment may also reduce the possibility of them dropping out or wanting to change course at the end of their first year of college.

We aim to ensure that students leave feeling clearer, motivated and empowered in their college selection. They learn important information on potential courses of interest in order to guarantee their continued success in the future.

Outcomes for 6th Year Students (2 hour appointment with an option of a follow up 3rd hour after Christmas)

In 6th year you tend to be really thinking about specific courses and /or universities – but often still need clarity on the differences between courses/career areas.

6th year can be a difficult and stressful time for many students. Often this is because students are still unsure of what they would like to study after they leave school.

Here at Career Connex we make it our priority to ensure you now find the courses that are best suited to your interests and needs.

Outcomes of an appointment for 6th year Students:

  1. To narrow down the possible career areas of interest for you

  2. To explore the outcome of your Career Interest Profile

  3. To help you select your top third level courses with codes and points.

  4. To help you and your parents understand the different options for Irish colleges and Universities -  Levels 6/7/8 – if you do not already understand it.

  5. To give you the resources to help you to do further research so you know that you are ultimately in charge of the courses that you finally select.

Outcomes for 5th Year Students (2 hour initial appointment with option of follow up hour in 6th year to finalise choices)

In this appointment, we spend approximately 90 minutes with the student and the remaining time with the student and their parent(s)/guardian going through outcomes and answering any questions.

This appointment is about understanding how the process works, how you as a student can research your option and how parents can also understand the full CAO process.

In our experience, while students will be encouraged to develop a list of possible courses - and this is very worthwhile - however we now know that many of the identified courses change between 5th and 6th year.- but this will be explained to the student. This is therefore an exploratory and learning session which aims to empower the student as they go through this process.

In 5th year you have the time and opportunity to reflect on all the possible careers and courses that you might like to do – and you also can plan to attend Open Days at Colleges and Universities
